Bellvís is a small municipality in the Pla d'Urgell comarca of Lleida, Catalonia. This 25 céntimos piece belongs to the wave of emergency fractional paper currency — known collectively as "moneda local" or "guerra civil" issues — produced by hundreds of Spanish municipalities during the Civil War when Republican authorities could no longer guarantee a supply of small coinage. The Generalitat de Catalunya authorized local bodies to fill the gap, and they did so with wildly varying quality and imagination.
Turró's catalog remains the standard reference for these Catalan municipal issues. The sequence number 404 places Bellvís within a well-documented but scarce series of rural Lleida emissions.
