Barbens is a small municipality in the comarca of Pla d'Urgell, Catalonia, with a population that barely reached a few hundred during the 1930s. That a village of this size issued its own fractional emergency currency is not unusual for Republican Catalonia — hundreds of municipalities did the same after the Civil War disrupted coin circulation following July 1936. What the note represents in collecting terms is extreme localism: Imprenta Popular in nearby Bellpuig served several of these tiny Urgell-area councils, and their output is identifiable by consistent typeface and layout choices across multiple issuers.
