Banyeres del Penedès is a small municipality in the Camp de Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, its local government stepped in to fill a vacuum left by the near-total disappearance of metal coinage from circulation. The Republican government's monetary system was under severe strain by 1937, and small-change shortages had become acute enough that ayuntamientos with no banking infrastructure were issuing their own fractional paper.
Imprenta Ramon in El Vendrell handled production for several nearby municipalities during this period — a local commercial printer pressed into monetary service by circumstance. Turró 287 places this issue within the broader Catalan emergency currency corpus, which runs to well over a thousand distinct municipal emissions.
