One of hundreds of municipal emergency issues produced across Republican-held Spain during the Civil War, when the hoarding of metallic coin created a paralyzing shortage of small change almost immediately after July 1936. The Consejo Municipal de Bañeres — a small town in the Valencian province of Alicante — issued these céntimos notes under Frente Popular authority to keep local commerce functional. Production was entirely local, which accounts for the variation in print quality and the reliance on an official stamp as the primary authentication device.

These municipal papers, collectively known as "moneda local de guerra," were only valid within the issuing municipality's jurisdiction. Worthless the moment you crossed into the next town.
