Arenys de Mar was one of hundreds of Catalan municipalities that issued its own fractional paper currency during the Spanish Civil War after the collapse of normal coin circulation in 1936. The Republican government's silver and copper coinage vanished almost immediately — hoarded, melted, or simply lost in the chaos — leaving local councils scrambling to print their own small-denomination substitutes. The Ajuntament turned to Imprenta Ausetana in Vic, a commercial press that supplied emergency notes to numerous towns across the region during this period.
The official stamp was the primary anti-counterfeiting measure, applied by hand after printing — a thin barrier against forgery, but the best most municipalities could manage.
