Additional information

L'Ametlla del Vallès was a small municipality northeast of Barcelona, and like hundreds of Catalan towns in 1937, it resorted to issuing its own emergency coinage after the Republican government's metal currency collapsed out of circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply absent. These local issues, known as *moneda local* or *moneda de necessitat*, were authorized under a framework that briefly allowed municipal councils and collectives to fill the void. The Generalitat de Catalunya eventually moved to suppress private and local issues by late 1937, rendering many of these tokens obsolete within months of striking.
