Almacelles is a small agricultural municipality in the Segrià comarca of Lleida province, and this note is one of hundreds of emergency fractional issues produced by Catalan local governments during the early months of the Civil War. The Republican government's inability to maintain adequate coin circulation — partly from hoarding, partly from the sheer disruption of wartime — forced municipalities across Catalonia to print their own low-denomination scrip to make change possible at all.
Imprenta Sol in Lleida handled a significant number of these municipal emergency issues for the surrounding comarca. The Turró catalogue remains the essential reference for this class of material.
