Alcubierre is a small village in the Monegros desert region of Aragon, and like dozens of similar municipalities, it issued its own emergency scrip during the Spanish Civil War after the Republican government's decree of September 1936 effectively sanctioned local currency production in areas where coinage had vanished from circulation entirely — hoarded, melted, or simply never present in sufficient quantity. The "Colectividad Libre" designation marks this as a collectivized issue, meaning the village's economy had been reorganized under anarcho-syndicalist administration, almost certainly under CNT influence given Aragon's political alignment at the time.
Monegros scrip from this period survives in very limited quantities. Many village issues were printed on whatever paper was available locally, and Alcubierre's notes reflect that improvised production — the Gari catalogue entry for this piece reflects just how fragmentary documentation of these municipal emissions remains.
