Alcorisa is a small municipality in the Bajo Aragón comarca of Teruel province, and this 25 céntimos note is one of hundreds of locally issued emergency fractional pieces that flooded Nationalist-contested and Republican-held territories alike during the Spanish Civil War. The collapse of small metallic coinage in circulation — hoarded almost immediately after July 1936 — forced municipalities, cooperatives, unions, and political organizations down to village level to print their own substitutes. Izquierda Republicana, the centrist-liberal party of Manuel Azaña, was the issuing authority here, which places this firmly in Republican-controlled Aragón during the conflict's early phase.
Survival rates for these local Aragonese emissions are uneven and often poorly documented.
