Alcalá de la Selva is a small municipality in the Gúdar-Javalambre comarca of Teruel, Aragón — exactly the kind of isolated rural community where the Spanish Civil War's collectivization movement took deepest root. When the CNT-FAO anarcho-syndicalist collectives reorganized agricultural and commercial life across Republican-held Aragón from 1936, local metallic coinage vanished almost immediately, hoarded or simply absent. Cooperatives like this one filled the gap with their own chits, valid only within the collective's own exchange network.
The Gari reference places this among documented Aragonese wartime local issues, but survival is predictably thin for notes of this size and weight from villages that were subsequently overrun by Nationalist forces in 1938.
