Albesa is a small municipality in the Noguera comarca of Lleida, Catalonia. This 25 céntimos note is one of thousands of emergency small-change issues produced by Catalan and Spanish municipalities during the Civil War, when coin hoarding and metal requisition for the war effort created an acute shortage of fractional currency. Local councils printed or commissioned their own paper substitutes — some on decent stock, many on whatever was available — with a rubber or ink stamp serving as the only authentication.
The Turró catalogue documents the Albesa issue as Turró#67, placing it firmly within this improvised wartime system rather than any formal monetary framework.
