L'Albagés is a small municipality in Les Garrigues, Lleida, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns, it issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Civil War — a direct consequence of the acute coin shortage that set in from 1936 onward, when metallic currency was hoarded, melted down for the war effort, or simply ceased to circulate. These municipal emissions, generically called "guerra civil locals" by collectors, were produced under almost no regulatory oversight, which accounts for the wide variation in materials and print quality across the series.
Turró 55 is among the scarcer emissions from this comarca. L'Albagés had a pre-war population well under a thousand.
