Adra's 25 céntimos note belongs to the vast ecosystem of Spanish Civil War municipal emergency currency — the *billetes de necesidad* — issued from 1936 onward when the Republic's central supply of small coinage collapsed almost immediately after the July uprising. Hundreds of Spanish municipalities printed their own fractional paper, and the smaller the town, the more rudimentary the production. Adra, a small fishing and agricultural town on the Almería coast, was no exception.
At under six centimeters long, this is among the smallest paper money formats Spain ever put into circulation. The sheer volume of surviving Civil War municipal issues means collector interest tends to concentrate on rarer localities — Adra pieces surface often enough to be affordable, but complete runs of the Almería provincial issues remain genuinely difficult to assemble.
