During the Spanish Civil War, the collapse of small-denomination coinage circulation forced hundreds of Republican-controlled municipalities to print their own emergency paper. Abarán, a small market town in the Murcia region, was among them. These local emissions — known as billetes de necesidad or emergency notes — had no legal standing beyond the issuing municipality itself and were theoretically redeemable only at the local ayuntamiento's cashier.

The Gari Monetary catalog reference (Mon#3-D) indicates this is one of several distinct varieties from Abarán's 1937 series, differentiated by serial number blocks, signature combinations, or minor typographic variants. Survival rates for these municipal issues are erratic — some towns printed thousands, others dozens.
