| Obverse description | Central round perforation surrounded by an ornate decorative frame incorporating foliate and acanthus motifs, flanked by the large initials 'R' and 'F' (République Française) in bold relief. A symmetrical spray of olive or laurel branches extends horizontally across the field on either side of the central hole. The denomination '25 CENTIMES' is inscribed in two lines across the upper field in prominent raised lettering. The date '1913' appears in the lower field, with the word 'ESSAI' inscribed to its right, denoting the trial or pattern status of the piece. The overall design is rendered in a clean, modernist style characteristic of early twentieth-century French coinage reform proposals. |

Henri Guis submitted this small-module trial piece to the Monnaie de Paris as part of the competitive process for redesigning French fractional coinage in the years before the First World War. The essai program routinely produced multiple module variants from the same engraver, allowing the administration to evaluate proportional scaling before committing to a production type. Guis's submission was ultimately unsuccessful — the circulating 25 centimes coinage of this period went to other designs — leaving his trials as mint curiosities rather than precursors to anything struck for commerce.
