Additional information

The Société Anonyme de la Grande Comore was a colonial plantation conglomerate granted sweeping administrative authority over the island by the French at the turn of the twentieth century — including the right to issue its own token currency. These aluminium pieces circulated among laborers on the company's vanilla and sugar estates, functioning as scrip redeemable only within the company's own stores. The arrangement kept wages effectively captive.

By 1915, the company's concession was in terminal decline, which likely accounts for the rarity of this issue today.
