| Obverse description | Right-facing draped bust of José Gervasio Artigas, national hero and founding father of Uruguay, occupying the central field. The portrait, engraved by Thomas Humphrey Paget, is rendered in fine relief with naturalistic detail to the hair and military collar. The engraver's initials HP appear below the bust truncation. The circular legend REPÚBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY runs along the upper periphery, while the name ARTIGAS flanked by raised dots and the date 1960 appear in the lower field. The design is framed by a continuous beaded border. |
