Spanish colonial 20 Centavos pieces circulating in Cuba were officially countermarked and revalued to 25 Centavos by decree during the 1870s, a direct response to chronic small change shortages that plagued the island throughout the Ten Years' War. The revaluation allowed Spain to stretch existing coinage without a full reminting program while the colonial economy strained under the costs of suppressing the independence revolt that had begun in 1868.
