| Obverse description | The obverse displays the host coin design: Liberty seated left upon a rock, her right hand holding a pole surmounted by a Liberty cap, her left arm resting on a shield bearing the word LIBERTY. Thirteen six-pointed stars encircle the field, and the date 1853 appears in the exergue flanked by arrows at each side. Superimposed on the design is the Cuban key countermark, punched into the right field, consisting of a key rendered in outline form applied by Cuban authorities to validate the coin for local circulation. |
