Additional information

This type replaced an earlier silver 25 centavos that had been debased and ultimately abandoned as silver prices made small-denomination coinage economically untenable. The shift to copper-nickel was part of a broader Mexican monetary rationalization that tracked similar moves across Latin America during the 1960s, as rising commodity prices outpaced the face value of silver fractional coins.

The series ran only three years before further monetary reforms sidelined the denomination entirely.
