Obverse description Central to the obverse is the coat of arms of Costa Rica, depicting a shield bearing a mountainous landscape with two oceans and three volcanoes, surmounted by a radiant sunburst of seven rays emanating from behind the shield. The shield is flanked by laurel and oak branches tied at the base, forming a wreath that frames the lower portion of the design. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA arcs across the upper field, while the date 1864 appears in the lower exergue beneath the wreath.
