Additional information

Bocchus II ruled Mauretania as a client king under Roman patronage, his loyalty shifting pragmatically through the chaos of the late Republic. He backed Caesar during the African War of 46 BC, receiving the kingdom of Numidia's western portion as reward after Juba I — who had sided with Pompey — committed suicide following the defeat at Thapsus. Upon his death in 33 BC, Bocchus left no successor, and Augustus simply absorbed Mauretania into direct Roman administration, ending the dynasty entirely.
