Obverse description The state emblem of the Romanian People's Republic occupies the central field, featuring a five-pointed star at its apex — a defining characteristic of KM#85.2 and KM#85.3, distinguishing them from the starless KM#85.1. The emblem is rendered in the Socialist Realist style typical of mid-20th century Eastern Bloc coinage. The circular legend reads 'REPUBLICA POPULARA ROMANA', rendered in the older orthographic form ('ROMANA' rather than 'ROMINA' used on KM#85.3), and the abbreviation 'RPR' appears within the design. The inscription is set in upright Latin capitals along the periphery of the coin.
