Oecusse — formally the Região Administrativa Especial de Oecu-Ambeno — is a non-contiguous exclave of Timor-Leste surrounded entirely by Indonesian West Timor, and its designation as a Special Economic Zone in 2014 prompted a short series of regional collector issues the following year. These pieces circulated within the broader framework of the US dollar, Timor-Leste's official currency, rendering the avo denominations essentially commemorative in function from the outset.
