By the mid-1990s, Turkey's chronic inflation had pushed the 25,000 lira into the role of a workhorse coin — roughly equivalent in purchasing power to what a single lira had been worth just a decade earlier. The Central Bank of Turkey was issuing denominations that would have seemed absurd in 1980, a direct consequence of inflation rates that peaked above 100% annually in 1994, the year before this series began.
The entire nickel brass series was rendered obsolete by the 2005 redenomination, which stripped six zeros from the currency and introduced the Yeni Türk Lirası.
