Essai pieces from francophone West Africa in this period were produced almost exclusively for the French collector market and government archives — actual circulation of a 25,000 CFA denomination in aluminium was never intended. Eyadéma had seized power in Togo in 1967, the continent's first modern military coup led by an enlisted soldier rather than an officer, and by 1977 his regime was consolidating a personality cult that extended into commemorative coinage.
The aluminium composition confirms this as a pattern or trial strike. KM#E15 is seldom encountered outside specialist West African collections.
