Ceylon passed from Dutch to British hands in 1796, but the colonial administration spent years sorting out what currency should actually circulate. The 24 Stivers was a holdover denomination from the Dutch VOC period — the Stiver being a Dutch colonial unit — issued under British authority while officials debated a longer-term monetary solution for the island. It's an odd artifact: British-issued coinage denominated in the currency of the power it had just displaced.
The type was superseded when Ceylon was formally ceded to Britain under the Treaty of Amiens' aftermath and a proper British colonial coinage was introduced in the following decade.
