Rhoemetalkes I ruled as a client king under Augustus, having sided decisively with Rome during the upheavals following Caesar's assassination — a loyalty that earned him both his throne and an expanded territory after Actium. This coin, pairing his portrait with that of Augustus, was a deliberate public declaration of that subordinate alliance, not merely a conventional issue. The uncertain mint attribution has occupied specialists for decades; candidates include Bizye and Perinthos, but no consensus has held.
