Reverse description The Portuguese royal arms displayed on an ornate shield, featuring the traditional quintas arrangement of five escutcheons charged with bezants, surrounded by a bordure of castles, all surmounted by the Portuguese royal crown. The shield is supported by elaborate Baroque scrollwork and foliate mantling on either side. The entire device occupies the central field of the coin, which is the reverse of the original Portuguese host coin countermarked for use in Demerara and Essequibo. No legend or inscription appears on this face.
