Aristide Briand won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1926 alongside Gustav Stresemann for engineering the Locarno Treaties, which briefly normalized Franco-German relations after the First World War. His 1929 memorandum to the League of Nations proposing a federal European union was ignored by virtually every government it reached — France included, within a decade.
This piece is part of a Luxembourg-issued commemorative series honoring architects of European cooperation, struck nearly half a century after Briand's death in 1932.
