Comments

A joint issue from five Baden chambers of commerce — Freiburg, Konstanz, Lahr, Schopfheim, and Villingen — this note belongs to the wertbeständiges Notgeld wave of late 1923, when the hyperinflation had made Reichsmark denominations meaningless within hours of printing. Anchoring the face value to both gold Pfennig and the US dollar was the practical solution: a fixed commodity or foreign-currency peg that would hold its worth long enough to change hands.

The multi-issuer arrangement was unusual. Pooling liability across five separate chambers spread the redemption risk and gave the scrip broader regional acceptance across the southern Black Forest corridor.
