Ferdinand I took the Bulgarian throne in 1887 under deeply contested circumstances — Russia refused to recognize his reign for over a decade, and several European powers were slow to follow. This 1888 issue was struck just one year into that precarious rule, at a moment when Ferdinand was actively minting coinage to assert governmental legitimacy he did not yet have universal diplomatic backing to claim.
