Obverse description The Bremen city key, symbol of civic authority, is depicted centrally in the field, its ornate bow rendered in a decorative scrollwork style with the shaft extending downward and terminating in an elaborate knotted tassel. The date 1820 is divided by the key, with the numerals '18' placed to the left and '20' to the right of the shaft. The design is unlettered, with the key motif filling the full extent of the flan in a bold, high-relief style characteristic of early nineteenth-century German municipal coinage.
