Obverse description A wreath composed of oak and olive branches surrounds the central round hole, the branches tied at the base. The Arabic legend arcs across the upper field reading 'State of Syria', flanked by two five-pointed stars. The French legend 'ETAT DE SYRIE' curves along the lower field in bold incuse lettering. The coin is struck with a beaded border running along the outer rim.

Reverse description Two forward-facing lion heads in high relief flank the central round hole, each framed by upward-curving olive branches forming a wreath around the aperture. The Arabic denomination legend 'غرشان ونصف' (two and a half qirsh) arcs across the upper field, with the Arabic numeral 2½ below it. The Latin denomination '2 PIASTRES 1/2' is inscribed in bold letters across the lower field, with the date '1940' and its Arabic-Indic numeral equivalent '١٩٤٠' below, and the word 'ESSAI' in the exergue denoting its trial strike status. A beaded border frames the entire design.
