| Obverse description | Draped bust of Pope Pius IX facing left, wearing a zucchetto and richly ornamented papal vestments with detailed foliate and scrollwork decoration on the cape. The portrait is rendered in high relief with finely engraved hair and facial features in a naturalistic style. The circular legend reads PIVS IX PON MAX AN XXI around the bust, separated by raised dots. The engraver's signature F. SPERANZA appears in small capitals along the lower rim below the truncation.
