Nuremberg's 2½ Kreuzer denomination is an oddity born of practical arithmetic rather than monetary theory — the fractional value allowed the city to bridge denominations in everyday market transactions without issuing excessive small silver. By the 1760s, Nuremberg's status as a Free Imperial City was financially precarious; the city carried substantial debts and relied heavily on billon coinage to manage circulation needs without depleting silver reserves.
The city lost its independence entirely in 1806 when Bavaria absorbed it under Napoleonic reorganization of German territories.
