Portugal's Jugo series — "the yokes" — draws from the tradition of decorated wooden ox yokes still found in the Minho and Trás-os-Montes regions, where elaborately carved and painted yokes were considered prestige objects tied to agricultural festivals and courtship customs. The 2014 silver striking of this issue is the .925 fineness version of what was also produced in base metal for general circulation, giving collectors access to the subject matter in a format that preserves fine surface detail the cupronickel pieces cannot match.
