Obverse description The obverse features the Portuguese national arms — the traditional armillary sphere encircled by the five escutcheons and seven castles of the shield of Portugal — rendered in high relief and framed by an elegant wreath of laurel and olive branches tied with a ribbon bow at the base. The denomination '2,5 euro' is inscribed in large characters in the lower central field, with the date '2013' below. The curved legend 'REPÚBLICA PORTUGUESA' flanks the design along the left and right periphery respectively. The mint mark 'INCM' appears to the lower left of the arms, with the engravers' names 'BANDEIRA' and 'DELGADO' inscribed in small characters to the right.

Additional information

The Portuguese Red Cross, founded in 1865, was among the earliest national Red Cross societies established following Henry Dunant's push for international humanitarian organization after Solferino. Portugal's chapter predates the formal Geneva Convention codification of Red Cross protections, making the institution's longevity the actual subject here. INCM struck this as part of their ongoing commemorative 2½ euro program, a denomination Portugal introduced specifically for collector silver issues following euro adoption — it carries no circulation mandate whatsoever.
