Additional information

José Malhoa (1855–1933) was among the most commercially successful Portuguese painters of his generation, best known for naturalistic scenes of rural life and popular festivities. His 1901 canvas O Fado became one of the most reproduced images in Portuguese cultural history, effectively fixing a visual identity for the genre at a moment when fado was still fighting for social legitimacy. The INCM's 2½ Euro cultural series, launched in 2010, was designed to fill a commemorative niche below the standard €5 silver issues — smaller in weight and price point, targeting collectors who found the flagship series prohibitively expensive.
