| Obverse description | Left-facing draped bust of Liberty in high relief, her hair swept back in flowing waves and gathered in a loose bun at the nape, secured by a plain fillet inscribed LIBERTY across the forehead. The portrait, engraved by George T. Morgan, is rendered in a naturalistic neoclassical style with fine detail in the hair and drapery. The circumferential legend E PLURIBUS UNUM arcs along the upper field, separated from the portrait by a plain inner border. The date 1878 appears prominently in the lower exergue. The coin is encircled by a finely reeded border. |
