Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, her flowing hair elaborately styled with curls and a ribbon behind. Thirteen six-pointed stars are arranged in an arc around the upper field, mirroring the thirteen original colonies. The date 1857 appears in the lower exergue in large numerals. The design is executed in high relief with finely detailed hair strands, characteristic of Gobrecht's neoclassical engraving style. A beaded inner border runs along the entire circumference.
