Obverse description A helmeted female figure personifying Columbia or the Genius of Commerce is depicted in high relief, seated astride a hippocampus (sea-horse) surging rightward through stylized waves. Her right arm is extended forward, brandishing a caduceus — the winged staff entwined with serpents, symbol of commerce and trade. The dynamic composition, rendered in the Art Nouveau style by sculptor Robert Aitken, fills nearly the entire field. The curved legend PANAMA-PACIFIC·EXPOSITION arcs along the upper periphery, while the date 1915 appears in the lower exergue flanked by the San Francisco mintmark S to the right.
