Obverse description Left-facing incuse portrait of a Native American chief wearing an elaborate feathered war bonnet, rendered in the distinctive sunken-relief technique pioneered by sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt. Thirteen five-pointed stars border the design along the left and right periphery, representing the original colonies. The legend LIBERTY arcs along the upper field, while the date appears in the lower exergual area; the engraver's initials B.L.P. are incised discreetly below the truncation of the bust.
