The motto IN GOD WE TRUST appears in two lines across the upper field on either side of the tower. The engraver's initials JRS are incused in the lower right field. Below the building, the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is inscribed in a straight line across the lower field. The commemorative legend SESQUICENTENNIAL OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE curves around the upper periphery, and the denomination 2 1/2 DOLLARS is arranged along the lower periphery.
