Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of Liberty in high relief, her hair elaborately coiled and gathered at the nape with a tiara or coronet inscribed PIKES PEAK. Flowing curls cascade to the truncation of the bust. Thirteen six-pointed stars are arranged in a semicircle around the upper field, referencing the original states. The date 1861 appears prominently in the lower exergue. A bold dentillated border frames the design.

Reverse description A heraldic American eagle displayed with wings spread and head turned to the right (viewer's left), clutching an olive branch in the left talon and a bundle of arrows in the right. The eagle's breast bears a vertical-striped shield. The circular legend CLARK GRUBER & CO. arcs along the upper periphery, with DENVER continuing along the right side. The denomination 2 1/2 D. appears in the lower field between two small dot stops, all within a dentillated border.
