Obverse description A centrally positioned King Protea flower (Protea cynaroides), the national floral emblem of South Africa, occupies the field in high relief, rendered in fine detail with prominent petals and foliage. The legend SOUTH AFRICA curves along the upper periphery, and the date 2009 appears at the bottom, flanked by small decorative devices. The engraver's initials KG are present in the lower field. The entire design is encircled by a beaded border, reflecting the style established by engraver George Kruger Gray.
