Obverse description A centrally positioned King Protea flower in full bloom occupies the field, rendered in fine relief with detailed petals and foliage extending to the lower portion of the coin. The legend SOUTH AFRICA arcs along the upper periphery in raised Latin lettering, while the date 2011 appears in the lower exergue flanked by small decorative stars. The design is attributed to George Kruger Gray and is executed within a beaded inner border. The overall composition is elegant and botanically precise, characteristic of South African commemorative coinage of this series.
