Obverse description A finely detailed rendering of the King Protea (Protea cynaroides), South Africa's national flower, occupies the central field, depicted in high relief with its characteristic broad petals and foliage on a stem. The engraver's initials 'KG' appear at the base of the stem in the lower field. The arched legend 'SOUTH AFRICA' curves along the upper periphery, while the date '2006' flanked by small floral ornaments is inscribed along the lower rim. A beaded border encircles the entire design.
