Obverse description A finely detailed depiction of the King Protea (Protea cynaroides), South Africa's national flower, occupies the central field, rendered in high relief with prominent petals and foliage. The legend SOUTH AFRICA curves along the upper periphery, while the date 2012 appears in the lower exergue, flanked by decorative star ornaments. The engraver's initials KG are incused beneath the flower. A DBN privy mark, accompanied by a small pictorial symbol, is situated to the right of the central device. The entire design is bordered by a beaded inner ring.
