Obverse description Central field features a bold relief depiction of a King Protea (Protea cynaroides), the national flower of South Africa, rendered in fine detail with prominent petals and foliage. The legend SOUTH AFRICA arcs across the upper periphery in raised Latin lettering. The date 2014 appears in the lower field, flanked by two small decorative rosette ornaments. The engraver's initials KG appear below the flower, attributing the design to George Kruger Gray. The coin is struck to proof quality with a milled border of fine beading encircling the entire design.
